DecoTurf surface taking shape, with color!

We are in the final stages of the DecoTurf surface applications.  Other work such as line painting, curtain hanging and net installations will be completed over the next several days.   The Grand Re-Opening celebration has been planned for Friday, August 31st from 5 - 7:30 p.m. with ribbon cutting, pro exhibition, and round-robin play.  Complimentary hors d'ouevres and member signed bar service.   Reservations encouraged by calling the tennis shop at 320-3244.

Insulation Repaired and Added

Before

To improve the indoor climate and energy efficiency, insulation was both added and repaired around the perimeter of the facility. The insulation covering all of the walls was then cleaned by a professional cleaning company.

Asphalt Goes Down

In one of the most critical steps in the tennis court reconstruction, asphalt is spread across the sub-floor in two applications. The three inch surrface is spread and rolled. The indoor facility reached temperatures of over 130 degrees as the work was occuring.

Coating and Painting

Painting of the steel colums on the indoor courts is underway. The first step in the process is the coating of the base of the steel where the areas were affected by rust and corrosion caused by water in the facility. The base coat is a zinc layer that prevents further rust damage and will protect the metal from any moisture. Next, the entire column will be covered with an aluminum based paint that will serve as a base for the white primer and paint. In total the beams will receive between 5 and 6 applications. These coatings will protect the building and last for years to come.

Care of the Building

Years of build up of clay and materials caused some significant damage to sections of the indoor structure. The moisture combined with the lack of air movement below the surface led to the deterioration of door frames, electrical boxes, and the bases of some of the steel columns. Through the course of the renovation these areas have been repaired or replaced by the maintenance staff of Willow Oaks to ensure safety and to extend the life of the building. Here you see the frame of the entry door that was uncovered as part of the excavation. The clay and gravel were as high as one foot above the base of the door frame.

Building a New Base

During the excavation, 15 to 16 inches of material was removed from the entire court surface. From there, the ground was leveled using a small construction grader. A layer of stone 4 inches deep will be spread and compacted throughout the building to provide a  strong base for the new courts.

Preparing for Net Posts

As part of the construction, the concrete supports for the net posts are being replaced.  The posts are being removed along with the old cement bases.  The new foundations begin with removing 4 feet of material from the subfloor.  Steel and PVC pipe is set in the concrete as for a sleeve for the new net posts.

Protecting the Steel Columns




   





Moisture from the indoor facility has caused rust and minor corrosion to the steel structure.  Each of the beams will be sandblasted, painted with a protective coating, and repainted prior to installation of the new courts.  This stage of the process is expected to take four days.

Above is a photo of a cross section of the top layer of the old courts.   You can see over time that the clay surface had become compacted, making it difficult to maintain consistent conditions.

Renovation Begins

Renovation to the indoor tennis courts at Willow Oaks began on Monday, May 21 bright and early. The first stage of the project is the removal of the court material and the plastic piping from the old underground watering system. Hundreds of tons of clay and gravel is being removed in order to reach the original floor level when the building was constructed. In excavation about 12-14 inches of material will be taken from the court surface. This stage of the process will take about 7-10 days.

Welcome to the Willow Oaks Country Club Tennis Blog. By logging on, members will be able to stay current on the indoor court renovation at the Club. The site will include information about the construction of the courts, daily news regarding schedules and court arrangements, education on the new facility and playing surface, and a lot of great photos.

Once the project gets moving twitter updates will also be available to those who would like to follow the progress.
